Iceland has the world’s best diet, but it’s bad news for the UK…

Want to lose weight, reduce your risk of diabetes and heart disease AND cut down the chances of mental illness?
Well, according to Channel 4 s documentary The World’s Best Diet, you should be heading to Iceland, or at least adapting to their diet.
The new show, on tonight at 9pm, reveals that the Icelandic combination of fresh fish, high quality meat and dairy products has ensured the secluded country has landed the top spot when it comes to the healthiest diet in the world – closely followed by Italy and Greece, proving that the Mediterranean way of life really is beneficial *books a beach holiday immediately*.
Presented by Jimmy Doherty and Kate Quilton, the documentary features leading nutritionists and dietitians ranking different country’s diets based on weekly shops and typical meals and snacks
And, whilst some of our European neighbours may have scored well in the round-up of 50 nations, England came out at 34, whilst Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were even further behind at 35,36 and 37. Oh.
And even further behind the UK was Australia and the US, whilst the Marshall Islands were dubbed to have the world’s unhealthiest diet. Eek.
But why? Well, before the US landed following the Second World War, the residents of the Marshall Islands farmed and harvested all their own food, whereas now they rely heavily on additive-filled American exports including Spam and tinned vegetables.
Whilst the programme does make us look like chubby imbeciles, it acts as a bit of a kick up the bum to laying off the McDonald’s and Lucky Charms. Sad face.
Looks like we’ll be stealing our healthy eating advice from the Icelandics, Greeks and Italians then…
